About Us
Vel Tech, “A Place to Progress and Prosper”, was started as an Engineering college in 1997, under the Trust founded by the Educational-Philanthropic Personalities - Dr. R. Rangarajan, Chancellor and Founder President and Dr. Sagunthala Rangarajan, Foundress President. The college was initially affiliated to the University of Madras and then affiliated to Anna University, Chennai in 2001. Later, the institution was granted the ‘Deemed to be University’ status with the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC u/s 3 of Act 1956) in 2008. Vel Tech is recognized as Category - 1 deemed to be University by the UGC in 2023. The institution is affiliated to AICTE and accredited by NAAC (second cycle) in 2023 with highest A++ Grade (CGPA 3.53/4.0) and (first cycle) in 2015 with ‘A’ Grade (CGPA 3.17 / 4.0). All the eligible B.Tech. programmes have been accredited by NBA.
The institution offers 18 UG, 19 PG and 15 Ph.D. programmes in Engineering, Management, Law and Media. It has 10434 students (UG-9330, PG-523, Ph.D.-643) and 800+ faculty members with 500+ doctorates. Further, to enhance the students’ regional diversity, the institution provides Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarships ranging from 25% to 100% of the Tuition fee to the students.
Vel Tech is the first member from India to be part of CDIO, an innovative educational framework for producing the next generation engineers. Vel Tech stands in the Top 100 in a row of seven years in NIRF India Rankings, under Engineering category from 2017 to 2023. The Institution is also placed in the Band "11 - 50" in Innovation category of National institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2023. The institution has also been ranked one of the top institutions by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings every year. The Vel Tech TBI (Technology Business Incubator) under NIDHI Prayas by the Government of India is recognized as the Center of Excellence.

Academic programmes are offered In Engineering, Management, Media Technology Arts & Science and Law. The academic curriculum of the institution facilitates collaborative learning with research projects and taught by committed faculty members, leading experts from industries/organizations and international visiting faculty.
The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) gives student's flexibility to choose the course of their choice and learn at their own pace. CDIO methodology is also practiced in the curriculum, an innovative educational framework for producing the next generation of Engineers. The Institution is the first member from India to implement and practice CDIO methodology.

There are ample opportunities for students/ scholars/ faculty to hone their research skills during their research work at the Institution. More than 23+ independent labs are facilitated to engage faculty and students’ in research work.
