About Us
Goa University was established under the Goa University Act of 1984 (Act No. 7 of 1984) and commenced operations on 1 June 1985. The University is included under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and also awarded the status 12 B of the UGC Act, 1956 by the University Grants Commission. The university provides higher education in the Indian state of Goa. Currently Goa University has NAAC rating of B++ and NIRF ranking in the band of 151-200. It is placed in the State Public University Rank-band of 51-100. The QS University rankings has ranked Goa University at 601-650 rank band in QS Asia Ranking 2024 while Times Higher Education has ranked it in the band of 501-600 in Asia and 78 in India in 2024. The Departments at the University have developed excellent research facilities. Large funding for research is received from Central Government agencies and Ministries. The University has been recognized as Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU) and awarded grant of Rs.100 crore under PM-USHA scheme of Government of India. The University offers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD research programmes across its ten schools in various domains that includes social sciences and behavioural studies; business and management; law, governance and public policy; biological sciences and biotechnology; chemical sciences; earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences, international and area studies, physical and applied sciences; Sanskrit, philosophy and Indic studies and languages and literature. A number of BA/BCOM/BSc/BBA; MA/MCOM/MSc/MBA programmes are available across various disciplines of studies in these schools of the University and affiliated colleges. The research outcomes (over 6500) in the form of papers, theses, etc., have been made available to the public over the university website in its publications repository. The Web of Science® reports about 1400 items on their database accruing over 16000 citations. The University publications have an h-index of 54.
Area of Excellence
The University has made a significant impact at the national level in various areas of specialization. Goa University has appropriately emerged as an important resource centre for research in the field of flora and fauna endemic to this region, as well as the marine environment. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has recognized Goa University’s significant contribution in this domain, as a consequence of which a Centre of Excellence was established in Marine Microbiology. Further, the University faculty contributes in the areas of tourism, state finances, policies on indigenous products, translations and literature, geopolitics, diaspora studies, material sciences, chemical sciences, cultural and environmental studies, entrepreneurship as well as interdisciplinary studies.
Research Capability and Focus Area
The university is committed to addressing local and global issues, with research areas including environmental studies, marine sciences, social sciences, and computer sciences, which reflect Goa’s cultural heritage and ecological diversity. In environmental studies, researchers focus on sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate change, engaging with local bodies for policy development and sustainable practices.
In marine sciences, the emphasis is on understanding marine ecology to contribute to global discussions on sustainability. Social sciences research explores migration, tourism, and socio-economic dynamics, striving to address the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Furthermore, the newly established Goa University Research Park (GURU) fosters research, innovation, and collaboration across various fields, preparing students for future careers in a technology-driven world while promoting sustainable development and community engagement.
