About Us
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc, MS (R), Dual Degree and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.
Area of Excellence
IIT Guwahati thrives to be at the frontline of research in the specialized areas of its departments and centres in addition to excelling in its academic services. It has been receiving increasing numbers of sponsored R&D projects from Govt. of India departments and agencies, national and multinational corporations, and international research centres, delivering findings to the satisfaction of the sponsors. Grants received under these projects have helped to further strengthen the research infrastructure of the Institute. As a spinoff, a large number of youths have been trained in research through engagement in temporary research positions in these projects.
Within a short span of twenty three years after its establishment, IIT Guwahati has been able to establish itself as a leading technology institute in the world. This is evident from its prominent rank along with established institutes of India despite being at a geographically remote location. IIT Guwahati has been able to establish a sprawling lush green vast campus with state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructure. In the NIRF ranking 2018 it was ranked 7th in the Engineering category and 12th in the Overall category. IIT Guwahati has also been ranked 12th in the World ranking of under fifty years university just after twenty years of establishment which is a remarkable achievement. In addition, IIT Guwahati also features prominently in Times Higher Education (THE) and since 2014, IIT Guwahati was 14th among the top ranked young universities in the world as declared in the year 2016 which is remarkable since no other IITs or national HEI were present in the list ever since the rankings began. In all ranking parameters IIT Guwahati has shown improvements over the years.
Research Capability and Focus Area
Research is an integral part of the activities of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The Institute conducts researches within its academic programmes under all the departments and the academic centres. Its faculty members also conduct research projects sponsored by various government agencies and companies. The aims of theses sponsored researches are varied starting from the advancement of theoretical knowledge to development of new technology to solve practical problems.
The sponsored researches conducted till now has covered areas such as theoretical and applied aspects of core science (physics, chemistry and mathematics), social sciences, information and communication technology, electronics, artificial intelligence, material science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, alternative energy, environment, water resources, structural and earthquake engineering, geotechnical engineering, chemical engineering, heat transfer, machine design, manufacturing, product design, etc.
Sponsored research in the Institute has contributed in terms of development in knowledge and technology. It has also helped to bring the academia closer to the industry. In addition, it has added to the infrastructure of the Institute through acquisition of modern equipment for the research projects. The research projects have also acted as the training ground for the young post-graduates just out of the universities.
