About Us
Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya (GGV), located in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, is a Central University of India, established under the Central Universities Act 2009, No. 25 of 2009. Formerly known as Guru Ghasidas University (GGU), it was initially established by an Act of the State Legislative Assembly and was formally inaugurated on June 16, 1983. In 2009, it was upgraded to a Central University, reflecting its growing significance in the Indian higher education landscape.
The university is named in honor of the great Satnami saint Guru Ghasidas, who was born in the 17th century. Guru Ghasidas was a social reformer and spiritual leader who dedicated his life to fighting against social injustices, discrimination, and evils such as casteism and untouchability. He worked relentlessly for the upliftment of the downtrodden and oppressed sections of society. His teachings and principles continue to inspire generations, particularly in central India.
GGV is situated in a region that is socially and economically challenged, making its role in providing quality education even more significant. The university strives to make higher education accessible and inclusive, especially for students from rural and marginalized backgrounds. As a residential institution, GGV offers a holistic academic environment that supports learning, research, and personal development.
The university is an active member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), which connects it with the global academic community. These affiliations help in fostering academic collaboration, exchange programs, and research partnerships at the national and international levels.
With a commitment to academic excellence, social equity, and community engagement, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya continues to contribute significantly to the educational and socio-cultural development of the region and the country at large.
