About Us

IISERs were set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development with the primary goal of integrating high quality research with undergraduate teaching to improve science education in India and to enhance the number and quality of future researchers of the country. IISER Pune campus is spread over a 100-acre campus in Pashan, which is an educational and research hub of Pune with National Chemical Laboratory, University of Pune and many other premier institutes in the vicinity. IISER Pune offers a 5-year BS MS dual degree program, Integrated-PhD programs for bachelor level students, and PhD programs for Master's level students in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. As of April 2018, IISER Pune has a total of 1398 students with 850 BS MS students, 548 Integrated PhD/PhD students and 122 faculty members. One of the greatest strengths of IISER Pune is an interdisciplinary ambiance where physicists, chemists, biologists and mathematicians work shoulder-to-shoulder on a common problem. Each year, several of IISER Pune faculty members are recognized through awards and honors at the national and international levels, and students get selected to receive fellowships/awards to carry out summer projects and to present their work at international conferences. IISER Pune actively pursues collaboration both nationally and internationally on topics in the frontiers of science and technology. The institute has established partnerships with >20 international universities and institutes. IISER Pune is a member organization of the CERN Large Hadron Collider’s CMS Collaboration. Over 1700 research papers have been published by IISER Pune faculty members. The 2017 Nature Index Tables spanning the year 2016 rank IISER Pune 8th in India, 92nd in Asia Pacific and 358th at the global level for institutional research output in the academic and corporate sectors. As of April 2018, 605 students have received their BS MS and PhD degrees. Many of these graduates are now in prestigious research institutes in India and abroad with a large number of students choosing to pursue a PhD or a postdoctoral program and some of them joining the industry. IISER Pune voluntarily engages in academic and social outreach efforts. As part of this, while Disha, a student led voluntary organization, works with underprivileged school children, COESME (Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education) set up as part of an MHRD scheme focuses on training teachers across India.

Area of Excellence

IISER Pune works in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.

Research Capability and Focus Area

IISER Pune is an undergraduate research and teaching organization where faculty members who are actively pursuing research engage in teaching undergraduate students (BS MS dual degree programme) as well as in training Integrated PhD (post-bachelors) and PhD (post-mastes’) students. Each faculty member manages a research group working on or more topics in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. IISER Pune also offers a post-doctoral programme for PhD students. IISER Pune is well equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure to carry out competitive research in the frontier areas of science.
